Brazilian wax aftercare
Freshly waxed skin has open follicles and a compromised surface barrier for a day or two. Almost everything that goes wrong after a wax — bumps, irritation, ingrowns — traces back to something done in that window. This is the short list.
For the first 24 to 48 hours, avoid
- Hot showers, baths, saunas and hot tubs. Warm water is fine; heat is not.
- Working out and anything that makes you sweat. Sweat in an open follicle is the classic cause of next-day bumps.
- Swimming pools and the ocean — chlorine, salt and bacteria.
- Tight clothing. Friction against a fresh wax is what turns a fine result into an irritated one.
- Sex.
- Sun exposure and tanning beds. Freshly waxed skin burns easily.
- Exfoliating, scrubbing or any acid on the area.
- Touching it. Hands carry bacteria straight into open follicles.
What to do instead
- Wear loose cotton underwear — go up a size for a day if you have it.
- Keep the area clean and dry with a gentle, fragrance-free wash.
- Apply something calming and light. This is exactly what Punani Oil was made for — jojoba, tea tree and lavender, formulated to settle freshly waxed skin and help with bumps.
- Cool compress if there is any lingering heat.
From day three onward
This is when you start exfoliating again — gently, two or three times a week. Consistent light exfoliation between appointments is the single most effective thing you can do to prevent ingrown hairs, and it matters far more than anything you do in the first 48 hours.
Keep moisturising. Hydrated skin releases hair more easily at your next appointment.
What is normal, and what is not
Normal: pinkness for a few hours, small histamine bumps that settle overnight or within a day, a little tenderness.
Not normal, and worth texting about: bumps that are still there after several days, anything with pus, spreading redness, or warmth that keeps building instead of fading.
Between now and your next appointment
Do not shave. It restarts the growth cycle at different stages and makes the next wax patchier and more uncomfortable. Four to six weeks is the rhythm that keeps hair finer and appointments easier.
Quick answers
What should you not do after a Brazilian wax?
For 24 to 48 hours avoid hot showers, saunas, workouts and sweating, swimming, tight clothing, sex, sun exposure and exfoliating. Also avoid touching the area, since hands introduce bacteria into open follicles.
How long after a Brazilian wax can I shower?
You can shower right away, but keep the water warm rather than hot for the first 24 to 48 hours.
When can I exfoliate after waxing?
Wait about 48 hours, then exfoliate gently two to three times a week. This is the most effective way to prevent ingrown hairs.
Are bumps after a Brazilian wax normal?
Small bumps and pinkness in the first day are a normal histamine response and usually settle overnight. Bumps that persist for several days, contain pus, or come with spreading redness are worth having looked at.
