How to prepare for your Brazilian wax

Five things make a real difference to how your appointment feels. Everything else is optional. Here they are in the order you will do them.

72 to 48 hours before

  1. Exfoliate gently — a washcloth, a soft scrub or a chemical exfoliant. This lifts dead skin so the wax grips hair instead of flakes, and it is your best defence against ingrown hairs afterward.
  2. Do not exfoliate the day of. Freshly scrubbed skin is more reactive and more likely to lift.
  3. Stop shaving. If you are still shaving three days out, you will not have enough length.

The day before

  1. Moisturise, but keep it light and skip it entirely on the morning of — oily skin makes wax slip.
  2. Skip retinol, glycolic acid and any prescription topical on the area for about 24 hours. These thin the skin surface and raise the risk of lifting.
  3. Drink water. Hydrated skin releases hair more easily than dry skin.

The morning of

  1. Shower and wash the area with plain soap. Arriving clean is the only real prep requirement.
  2. Skip caffeine. It tightens you up and makes skin more sensitive — this one is more noticeable than people expect.
  3. Take an ibuprofen about 20–30 minutes before, if you can take it safely. Not aspirin, which thins the blood.
  4. Wear loose cotton. Leggings and tight denim trap heat and friction against skin that has just been waxed.
  5. No lotion, oil, powder or deodorant on the area.

Timing it around your cycle

Skin is most sensitive in the two or three days before your period and least sensitive in the week after. If you have flexibility, book the comfortable window. If you do not, you can still be waxed on your period — see the separate guide on that.

Things worth bringing

  • A spare pair of underwear, if you would rather not put the same pair back on.
  • Your questions. Anything you have been too self-conscious to ask over text is fair game in the room.

What you do not need to do

You do not need to trim it yourself unless it is over an inch. You do not need to apologise for anything about your body — genuinely, there is nothing your esthetician has not seen. And you do not need to shave first; that is the one thing that will actually stop the appointment from working.

Quick answers

Should I exfoliate before a Brazilian wax?

Yes — gently, 48 to 72 hours beforehand. Skip it on the day of, because freshly exfoliated skin is more reactive and more likely to lift during waxing.

Can I take a painkiller before a Brazilian wax?

Ibuprofen about 20 to 30 minutes before helps, if you can take it safely. Avoid aspirin, which thins the blood.

What should I wear to a Brazilian wax appointment?

Loose cotton clothing. Tight denim and leggings trap heat and create friction against freshly waxed skin.

Should I shower before a Brazilian wax?

Yes. Arrive clean, with no lotion, oil, powder or deodorant on the area — products stop the wax from gripping properly.
