What to expect at your first Brazilian wax
Most of the nerves around a first Brazilian come from not knowing the choreography. So here is the whole appointment, start to finish, including the parts people are too embarrassed to ask about.
Before you get on the table
You arrive, you are shown into a private room, and the door closes. In a one-on-one suite there is no waiting room and no one else in the space — it is you and your esthetician.
You will be asked a couple of quick questions: whether you have waxed before, whether you are on any skin medication like Accutane or a retinoid, and how much you want taken off. There is no wrong answer to the last one — everything, a strip, a triangle, all of it is normal.
What you take off
Everything from the waist down, including underwear. You will be given privacy and something to cover with. Once you are on the table there is a drape, and only the area being worked on is uncovered at any moment.
How you are positioned
On your back with knees bent, feet together, knees falling open — the "butterfly" position. For the back portion you will be asked to roll onto your side or pull a knee toward your chest. Your esthetician will tell you exactly how to move; you are not expected to guess.
The wax itself
- The area is cleansed and a light pre-wax product is applied.
- Wax goes on in small sections in the direction the hair grows.
- It is removed — quickly, with the skin held taut. That is the part that stings, and it lasts a second or two.
- Section by section, front to back. Most of the discomfort is in the first few pulls.
- Stray hairs are tweezed at the end, and a soothing product goes on.
Start to finish, a Brazilian is usually 20 to 30 minutes. A first one can run a little longer.
The questions people do not ask out loud
Is it embarrassing? For about ninety seconds, maybe. Then it becomes an appointment. Your esthetician is looking at hair and skin the way a dentist looks at teeth.
What if I am not freshly showered / on my period / have not been in a while? All handled routinely. Say so when you book so the appointment is set up for it.
Is it normal to feel a physical response? Yes — it is an involuntary reaction to sensation and warmth in a sensitive area, it happens, and professionals do not react to it. Nobody is going to say anything.
Can I ask her to stop? Always. At any point, for any reason.
Walking out
Expect some pinkness for a few hours and possibly small bumps that settle overnight.
